The purpose of this module is twofold: First, to examine the theoretical foundations concerning the use of e-learning in educational settings. The main area of focus includes definitions, terminologies, and theoretical frameworks of the e-learning concept. The second purpose complements the first: To overview some of the most current views on how the e-learning design models contribute towards the development of effective and engaging educational environments.

After studying this module, learners should be able to:
- Define the term “e-learning”.
- Explore and frame the main principles of the e-learning conceptual framework.
- Address the principles of the main learning theories, pedagogical concepts, and frameworks for designing e-learning environments.
- Describe what instructional design models are, and how we can incorporate their principles into e-learning educational systems.
- Consider the purposes, elements, and instructional strategies, as well as, the content is represented and organized through available technology tools..

The Structure of the 9th Module
This module is divided into six major sections.
- The first, Defining e-Learning, covers an extensive debate about a common definition of the e-learning concept and related terminologies. This section also discusses the main elements that support the conceptual framework of e-learning.
- The second, “Theoretical background for e-Learning Design” focuses on exploring the sources of the main learning theories, a variety of pedagogical concepts, and theoretical frameworks important for e-learning design practice.
- The third, “Instructional Design Models” introduce some of the dominant systematic approaches for designing innovative e-learning instructional systems.
- The fourth, “Material Design Models” addresses theoretical foundations, both systematic and agile design processes, and practical strategies for using materials to support e-learning instructional activities.
- The fifth, “Theory Based e-Learning Models” examine theoretical frameworks relevant to the material design aspects of distance and online education.
The sixth, “Educational Technology Approaches for e-Learning Design” reviews two approaches that are particularly relevant when using technology to design e-learning activities
